Why Art--Art's role in my life

After reading the Why Art article I was surprised we don't offer art programs in every school throughout the country. Seeing how art can really motivate students, who might otherwise be "turned-off" from school. But what I don't know, is how I, not as an art teacher, can promote art and encourage my students to try different types of arts to see what motivates them, while still sticking to the content of my curriculum?

Art has played a huge role in my life. My elementary school was a liberal arts school in Peru that believed the arts were very important for students, and that tests were not as important. I did not take a single test while I was in elementary school, instead we had different group projects and art projects. I took different sewing classes (knitting, crochet, and more), carpentry, cooking, along with my content related classes. Watercolor painting was also something we did on a daily basis while studying different content. Although I'm not a great artist, I can't really draw or paint as well as other people can, but I've always enjoyed different art aspects in my classes, especially when it was a hard topic, such a science, i would prefer to watercolor paint the water cycle than just read about it. Even though I'm not a great artist I've always loved different types of arts and crafts and making different things. When I was little I took all sorts of arts and crafts classes, like candle making, tie dye, and more. I realized that art played a much bigger role in my life than I thought once I started to think about it.

If you ask my family, they will say that the "artists" in my family are my dad and brother, since my dad makes incredible sculptures and paintings and my brother can perfectly draw anything just like what it looks like in real life. Even though I'm not the typical "artist", I do enjoy how art relaxes me and how it helps me concentrate into doing one thing at a time.
